PLAYS OF THE WEEK

PLAYS OF THE WEEK.

Happy new season to our fellow Footy on Paper faithful and we welcome you to the first post for Plays of the week 2015/2016 season, where we would bring you blitz from what happened during the footballing week in the top five leagues in the world (Premiership, Serie A, Ligue1, Eredivisie and the Bundesliga) with inclusion of anything spectacular that happened in the other leagues from around the world. Enjoy…………

FLOP OF THE WEEK: Petr Cech (Arsenal).
Most of the top teams in the Premier League failed to leave up to their billing as goal-keepers where at the centre of attention. Example Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois got red carded for his lunge on Bafetimbi Gomis which saw Chelsea drop points at the bridge in their first game, Also Newcastle’s Tim Krul failed to parry Garraziano Pelle’s header which cost them 2 points against Southampton, but it was Petr Cech’s performance that caught all the headlines in the first week of the Premier League. Arsenal were shocked at the Emirates as West Ham got all 3points in their Premier league fixture. The first goal Arsenal conceded was from a set-piece were Cech started his run late and could not get to the ball before Cheikou Kouyate gave West-Ham the lead on the day. The second he (Cech), failed to sort out his fit as Mauro Zarate beat him at his near post. We know players have bad days and this should be a reality check for Petr Cech and Arsenal.

GOAL OF THE WEEK: Phillipe Coutinho (Liverpool).
In a very drab game with less creativity and opportunities, we had to wait till to 86th minute before we saw any spark and it was Coutinho that came up with the Magic as Liverpool beat Stoke 1-0 in their first Premier League fixture. Liverpool debutant Joe Gomez burst with pace down the right and fed Coutinho who attacked the space in front of him beating a Stoke City player in the process then hit a swerving shot from 25 yards which beat Stoke City goal keeper Jack Butland. Here’s a view of the goal in case you missed it.

SAVE OF THE WEEK: Boaz Myhill (West-Brom).
It was a top save but could it could not help West Brom as they suffered defeat against title contenders Manchester City. High-pressing won City possession in the middle of the park as Fernandinho sent a through pass which found Raheem Sterling one-on-one with Boaz Myhill, Sterling set himself up and finessed the ball to the right of Myhill’s goal but the goalie was quick to dive low and push the ball away with his palms. City later won the game 3-0.

MATCH OF THE WEEK: Everton v Watford (Barclays Premier League).
We all love to see how new teams fair in the Premier League and Watford have given us a bit of what they have in the locker in their 2-2 draw against Everton. Watford came into the game trying to suck in the pressure and hit Everton on the counter and Everton we know love to control the game. Watford’s game plan seemed to be on the cards as they got the first goal of the game scored by Mexican Miguel Layun. Watford totally controlled the first half as they restricted Everton to limited chances.
Second half, Everton came out with all guns blazing and looked set for an equaliser but Watford soaked in the pressure copped by excellent saves from Watford goalie Hurelio Gomes. Everton finally got their breakthrough when full-back Seamus Coleman sent a cross into the Watford box and Arouna Kone chested it down to lay up a pass for Ross Barkely who hit a venom shot from 20 yards that rose the roof at Goodison Park and made it 1-1. From here onwards, everyone would have expected The Toffies to go on for the winner but it was The Hornets (Watford) that got the next goal. Counter-attack from the away team saw Troy Deeney feed substitute Odion Igahlo who raced into the box, put John Stones on his back and placed a shot which deflected into the net. From here it looked like Watford were going to be the surprise team of the weekend but Everton did not lay their backs yet. Long ball from the Everton midfield was chested down by Romelu Lukaku to his on rushing strike partner Arouna Kone, Kone met the ball to hit a driven shot which met the corner Gomes goal and the scores were deadlocked. Both teams were conservative in the few minutes remaining, full-time came and both teams shared the points.

MANAGER OF THE WEEK: Slaven Bilic (West Ham)
The new West-Ham coach was criticised by fans for using a diminished squad in their mid-week Europa Qualifier which they lost the game. Well they found good fortune as that tactic payed off with the rested players pulling up an unexpected result beating title contenders Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. It’s been 8 years since a West-Ham team beat the Gunners but coach bilic was able to cause an upset. He played a 4-4-2 diamond formation that chocked up the midfield and absorbed Arsenal control. Took their chance when it came and left Arsene Wenger and his troops dumbfounded. Watch out for West-Ham this season they could be a pain for the top teams.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Caen (French LIGUE1)
Caen caused major upset as they went to the Stade Veldrome (Home of Marseille) to get all three points in their LIGUE1 opening fixture. They beat one of the title favourites 1-0 on the night. Marseille coach Marcelo Bielsa resigned after game, its sad to say but Marseille might have a torrid season.

COMBINED TEAM OF THE WEEK: 3-5-2
GK: Adrian (West-Ham).
The Spanish goal-keeper was on point as he made crucial saves to help his team salvage three points against Arsenal

CB: Angelo Ogbonna (West-Ham).
The Italy international played well on his Premier League debut for West-Ham. He was notably tracking the runs of Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud, stopping him from operating.

CB: Thiago Silva (PSG).
Was able to settle the back four even though they were down to 10 on the night after a his team suffered a red card. PSG still manage to get all three points beating Lille 1-0.

CB: Craig Cathcart (Watford).
The former Manchester United youngster was solid at the back for Watford against Everton. Was a nuisance for Lukaku as he did not allow him to perform during the game.

CM: Recce Oxford (West-Ham).
The 16 year-old is due to collect his GSCE’s result in a fortnight and played like he had the experience of a 33 year-old. He played at the base of the diamond tracking the Arsenal runners and stopping their attacks. What was most impressive about him was the way was calm in possession and never gave the ball away needlessly. Francis Coquelin on the opposite end would have learnt one or two things from the young lad.

CM: Yohann Cabaye (Crystal Palace).
The French midfielder was on debut for Palace as he helped trash Norwich 3-1 in their opening Premier League fixtutre. During the match he won 4 tackles, made 4 interceptions, created 1 chance and wrapped it up with a goal. Alan Pardew has done great business here getting the French man for only £13million. #BARGAIN

LW: Rihad Mharez (Leicester City).
The Algerian winger scored two out of the four goals Leicester scored against Sunderland. The tricky winger was a menace for the slow and leggy Sunderland defence. If he was on your FPL he should have copped you 15 points

RW: Marc Albrighton (Leicester City).
The tricky winger was involved in 3 of the 4 goals scored by Leicester on the night. He scored one and assisted the other two. The lad has been on a resurgence since he came back from his lengthy injury last season.

AM: Dimitri Payet (West-Ham).
The French international was a problem for the Arsenal players as he skilled most of them on the pitch. He was like a little Messi on the day getting out of tight situations with ease and was simply different class from the rest of the pack. Payet got an assist from the first goal as his darted cross was pin-point to the head of goal scorer Kouyate.

ST: Lucas Moura (PSG).
The Brazilian scored the only goal as 10 men PSG beat Lille 1-0 in their opening Ligue1 fixture.

ST: Arouna Kone (Everton).
The Everton Substitute came on to set up a first equaliser for Ross Barkely, then went on to score a second equaliser for his team helping them to salvage a point on the day.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Recce Oxford (West-Ham).
The England U-17 captain two years had a post on his twitter account saying Arsenal should sign Mesut Ozil, funny how the world rolls last Sunday he was playing against the same Mesut Ozil and some pundits said he stopped the German from playing. Don’t expect anything much from the young lad now in fact I don’t expect him to play much this season. He is surely one for the future, look out for him during the U-17 World Cup that will be played in Chile in November. #TALENT.
